Help out an old dude!

I'm 35 and skate with my son who's 9.  I skated alot in the 80's and a little more a couple of years ago.  My son is giving me a chance to skate again and I take him to the skate parks alot. I seen the Tony Hawk Trick Tips Vol. 3 and you were talking about when you learned the backside air and how sketchy it was to take it from the little hop at the coping to a real air.  I'm at that point.  I'm only landing the small ones (just over the top) and maybe 1 foot airs every 20 tries.  I was just wondering how long it took you to get it?  I feel like I spend more time climbing back up than skating. The ramp is a 9.5 foot tall ramp, with the same transition. (no vert) Would it be easier to learn on a ramp with vert or am I just making excuses? It's like my own ramp, nobody skates the ramps around here.

I spend more time climbing stairs than skating too. I think some more vert would help your grabs for sure. You have to learn to thrust you momentum up into your grab without throwing your board up over your head. It's basically a small bonk off the coping and then you just ride the invisable wall ride. It's about timing and body positioning. You have to send your board and body up in a flowing, carving motion while being on top of your board(not under it or in front of it to much). Keep your lower body almost motionless until point of re-entry then point it in. Under rotation is way better than over rotating.
